Utilizing images of both the string of pearls my mother inherited from her mother (Frances), and of my own body, I seek to examine the ways in which identity is fastened to individuals, places, and lineages. And more specifically, how the identity of my mother’s mother, a woman I have never met, can so solidly shape my own identity as well.
